Staying focused in today’s open office environments

Are you having trouble getting things done in an open office? The challenges are real. Office talk. People walking by constantly. No or low wall barriers between cubicles. It’s a lot of stimuli and a significant challenge for many.

And although there is no perfect solution to glass walls or visual/auditory distractions, we can offer some
“focus-friendly” tips to help you succeed:

✔️ Move Around a Bit

Use common spaces or break rooms during non-busy hours to get away and/or a change of scenery.

✔️ Plug Your Ears – Literally

Put in ear buds or headphones and let your team know that this is a signal that you need some time to stay focused.

✔️ Use a Deadline Notice

Create a “Do Not Disturb” or “Deadline” sign to hang on the back of your chair or on a cubical wall. This can help reduce or save friendly idle chat to a better time.

✔️ Take Five!

A break is great! Set reminders to walk around, stretch, grab some water or a healthy snack. Let your emotional and physical self relax and recharge. Movement, hydration and proper glucose levels stimulate the brain, help with energy, focus and creativity. So use a few, well-timed breaks to recharge so you can maximize your day!

✔️ Use Your Lunch Break!

It’s important to change your environment. Go grab a bite or coffee with a friend outside of your organization or go run an errand to break things up. Offices are required by law to allow for a break in the day for a reason. Use it to not only help you make your day more efficient, but additionally help you get ahead! Whether that is socially, emotionally or being that clever multitasker that you are- take it! We all need that break.
